Carnosine is a dipeptide fonned from two amino acids, beta alanine and I-histidine. Carnosine is found abundantly in both nerve and muscle cells. It helps extend the life of key building block cells, such as DNA, lipids and proteins. The body is made up of proteins, which help build cells and muscles. When proteins are damaged, the body is susceptible to disease and it ages at a quicker pace. Carnosine has been shown to rejuvenate cells and to even extend the life of the cell.
As we age, proteins are subject to attack and damage by oxidation and glycation. Oxidation occurs when free radicals attack the molecules in the body. Carnosine is a powerful antioxidant capable of combating oxidation. It is capable of quenching the strongest free radical, the hydroxyl radical. When proteins are damaged, antioxidants attempt to repair the damage or remove the damaged protein from the body. According to one study, carnosine was effective in protecting cellular chromosomes from oxidative damage.
Glycation occurs when protein and sugar cross-link. When glycation occurs, the result is loss of skin elasticity, neuro degeneration and the formation of countless free radicals. Antioxidants help fight against oxidation, but are unable to combat glycation. Carnosine, however, has been shown to work powerfully against glycation.
When proteins cross-link, they often form AGEs (advanced glycation end products). MDA (malondialdehyde) is a substance that causes protein cross-linking and AGE formation. With the fonnation of AGEs comes significant aging, resulting in everything from wrinkles to brain degeneration. Studies have proven carnosine capable of preventing the cross-linking between proteins, thus protecting the body from AGEs. One particular study indicated that carnosine is capable of inhibiting MDA-induced glycation, and may actually decrease MDA levels. This is especially effective protection against carbonylation (e.g. oxidation and glycation of amino acids, the protein building blocks) of blood albumin and protein in the lens of the eye (crystalline in nature), where MDA-induced glycation often occurs. |

Copper and zinc are both necessary minerals for the brain to transmit impulses. However, excess copper and zinc can be toxic to neurons. Fortunately, carnosine is found in high abundance in the brain and is a copper and zinc chelator. The carnosine binds excess copper and zinc, as nature's way of protecting the neurons from toxicity.
The second benefit of having sufficient carnosine in the brain also has to do with copper and zinc. When copper and zinc metabolize abnormally, senile plaque formation occurs. This is a common occurrence in Alzheimer's Disease. Carnosine is a key player again, binding excess copper and zinc, preventing senile plaque formation, which helps prevent brain degenerative diseases.
Naturally-Occurring Carnosine
Carnosine is naturally found in the body in the locations where it is needed most -- nerve and muscle cells. Carnosine is nature's way of helping to slow the aging process. It is a powerful antioxidant, able to quench free radicals and prevent the cross linking of proteins. It inhibits damaged proteins from harming healthy proteins. Supplementing carnosine may be an effective way to slow aging and prevent free radical damage. Add great tasting carnosine to a morning breakfast shake daily. |
